Superior Hiking Trail

During this trip P was 10, and T was 8

I really enjoy the Superior Hiking Trail! I went when I was a teenager with scouts, and I have been with friends three times since I returned to Minnesota after graduating collage. It was so special to share this trail with the kids and Marcus for the first time. Max, our old standard poodle came with on this trip. This would be his 3rd time on the Superior Hiking Trail! He loves it as well. However, at 11.5 years old, it was noticeable he was getting older. Still, he absolutely loved being on the trail.

Trip Dates: October 4-6, 2024

Total cost of trip: I didn't document the cost for this trip

The cost would have included; gas, meal on the way up, groceries, and meal on the way back. Camping is free.

Itinerary 2024 Trip

Day 1 - October 4

This morning we had a 3 hour 45 minute (233 miles) drive with a stop for lunch, a shuttle ride, and a hike to our first campsite, so we wanted to get an early start. We also wanted to leave before our youngest gets on the bus to make bus time goes easier.

~8:30 a.m. depart home

11:45 a.m. stop in Two Harbors, MN for lunch at Maderia Bistro. At this point I found out that they just put a fire ban for the area. Which was a big bummer.

We parked at our exit trailhead - Sonju Lake Trailhead and waited for our shuttle.

We took the shuttle to the Lake County Road 7 Trailhead in Finland

2:45 p.m. We had all of our gear on and started down the trailhead.

4:17 p.m. South Egge Lake - our first campsite. 2.9 miles

We parked at Penn Boulevard Trailhead. When we parked, the campground was full. We were one of the first cars to park on the road. By the time we had grabbed our packs, and the dogs ready, there were already so many more cars parked on the road.
