Carry Over Food

Carry over food is food that can be used for multiple meals. Here are a list of our popular carry over food items and the meals that they go with. This is not an inclusive list. When planning meals, it's helpful to think about what food can be used for multiple meals. This helps you make sure you have the amount you need for all of the meals it is needed for. It can help reduce the amount of the food you need to bring, and reduce food waste if you focus on meals that have carry over food items.

When getting ready for our week of camping this summer I cooked two of the meals two nights before we left. I will usually try to make the meal a week or two in advance and eat some for dinner that day and freeze the rest for the trip. This time, our schedule was busy and I didn't quite make that happen. So instead, I just cooked them at the same time, we actually didn't even end up eating either one that day.

I made Chicken Fried rice and vegetarian chili. These two meals work so well together as they use the same vegetables.

Veggies for both:

  • Carrots

  • Bell Pepper

  • Celery

  • Onion

  • Garlic
